A constant succession of lava flow, explosions, subsidence, projections of rock and lava took place over a period of 8 million years.

The ‘Barrage de l'Aigle’ (dam)
The ‘Barrage de l’Aigle’ dam on the River Dordogne is the most powerful hydroelectric installation in the valley. The arch-gravity construction, which straddles the ‘départements’ of Corrèze and Cantal, was built during the Second World War and opened on 15 October 1945.

This reservoir was created in 1945 with the opening of the Saint-Étienne-Cantalès hydraulic dam in the Vallée de la Cère. The lake, which is 20km from Aurillac, covers 562 hectares in the communes of Saint-Étienne-Cantalès, Saint-Gérons, Pers, Omps, Lacapelle-Viescamp and Saint-Mamet-la-Salvetat.

Aubrac has been a Parc Naturel Régional since 23 May 2018.

A rich historic and cultural heritage from the Middle AgesAnjony castle
The Château d’Anjony, built in 1430 on a small rocky spur, overlooks the village of Tournemire from its 40m high towers. It was built in its magnificent setting by Louis d’Anjony, a companion of Joan of Arc, on the orders of King Charles VII to keep order in Haute-Auvergne and subdue the brigands and mercenaries who were running wild in the region. It is comprised of a square keep flanked by four slim towers.
