The Cantal volcano is the oldest and largest volcano in Europe. Situated in the southern part of the Auvergne, it is the gateway to the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne (Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park). The Massif Central and the Cantal volcano in particular resulted from intense, ancient volcanic activity !! A constant succession of lava flow, explosions, subsidence, projections of rock and lava took place over a period of 8 million years.

The ‘Barrage de l'Aigle’ (dam)
The ‘Barrage de l’Aigle’ dam on the River Dordogne is the most powerful hydroelectric installation in the valley. The arch-gravity construction, which straddles the ‘départements’ of Corrèze and Cantal, was built during the Second World War and opened on 15 October 1945.

Saint Etienne Cantalès Lake
Saint-Étienne-Cantalès lake is set among the beautiful, rolling, wooded countryside of the Chataigneraie of Cantal chestnut groves. It has a very indented shape with several peninsulas. This reservoir was created in 1945 with the opening of the Saint-Étienne-Cantalès hydraulic dam in the Vallée de la Cère. The lake, which is 20km from Aurillac, covers 562 hectares in the communes of Saint-Étienne-Cantalès, Saint-Gérons, Pers, Omps, Lacapelle-Viescamp and Saint-Mamet-la-Salvetat.

On a little peninsula beside Bort-les-Orgues reservoir, its silhouette reflected in the peaceful waters of the River Dordogne, the Château du Val is a ’must see’ attraction of Cantal ! Built for defensive reasons in the 15th century on a 30m high rock, the castle used to overlook the Vallée of the Dordogne.

L'Aubrac
Aubrac in the Massif Central is a high volcanic and granite plateau of about 3,000km². It extends over 3 départements : Cantal, Aveyron and Lozère. It is bordered to the north-west by the Monts du Cantal, to the east by La Margeride and to the south by the limestone plateau of the Grands Causses. Aubrac has been a Parc Naturel Régional since 23 May 2018.

A rich historic and cultural heritage from the Middle Ages
Anjony castle
The Château d’Anjony, built in 1430 on a small rocky spur, overlooks the village of Tournemire from its 40m high towers. It was built in its magnificent setting by Louis d’Anjony, a companion of Joan of Arc, on the orders of King Charles VII to keep order in Haute-Auvergne and subdue the brigands and mercenaries who were running wild in the region. It is comprised of a square keep flanked by four slim towers.
