The Cantal Chestnut Grove

Towards animals

In Châtaigneraie, travel across the region and try to meet animals, for example in Junhac in the "Vallée des Daims" (deer valley). Located in a forest area, come with your children for a train tour or a 2km walk to get closer to deers. Park is open on bookings from April to November, and open evey day from June to August.

Young people as older can explore the region by horse riding, many equestrian centres propose horse and pony riding in Maurs la Jolie, or Saint-Etienne Cantalès. For a walk with a donkey, go to Puycapel, to bergers d'Espradel, to discover the countryside. Close during winter, donkey start their work in April.

Museums and tours

For a cultural activity, children will love Veinazes Museum, between Lafeuillade-en-Vézie and Montsalvy. In this museum, rural world history of the 20th Century is related through agricol equipment. Raymond explains the old methods of agriculture.

In summer, many guided tours during day or night offer a nice visit of villages of Châtaigneraie. Laroquebrou is visited with Chinese lantern, and Vieillevie castle with candles.

Underwater!

Children like summer for water! In Châtaigneraie cantalienne, "adventurers" go down the Lot valley to the Vieillevie canoe base. In Saint-Etienne Cantalès, the dam lake is a nice place for children. On Rénac peninsula, the adventure course proposes one hour paddle trip to explore the lake. An aquatic park welcomes children for water slides, climbing wall, trampolines and swings. For swimming and a rest by the water, Espinet and Puech des Ouilhes beaches are nice for relax.

In Châtaigneraie, refresh yourself in Cassaniouze, Lafeuillade-en-Vézie, Saint-Saury, Omps…  Make the most of fishing through quietness you have by the water. In summer, ask to the Châtaigneraie cantalienne I-Site to discover where you can fish in family.

Au contact de la nature

On your holidays, you would like discovering the beautiful landscapes of Châtaigneraie with your children?

In Laroquebrou, the I-Site suggests a booklet to children who can follow an itinerary to explore fauna and flora of the village by the river.

In Saint-Etienne de Maurs, the Senergues botanic trail takes 3.2km, a nice length to discover in family geology, fauna, mushrooms and agriculture.

Then, in Nieudan you will enjoy the pedalorail, an original, funny and sportive activity to go through the Châtaigneraie on old  Cantal railway lines.

  • The Châtaigneraie I-Site has agencies in Le Rouget, Maurs, Laroquebrou and Montsalvy, and Marcolès in July/August.
