Le Puy Mary
Puy Mary (1783m) is the emblematic volcano of Cantal, the largest in Europe. Whether as a couple, with family, with friends; whether you are a fisherman, hiker, trail runner, cyclist or thrill seeker, you will love exploring around the Grand Site de France.
The Puy Mary is a challenge for sport lovers. Riders like crossing various valleys around to reach the Pas de Peyrol (1589m), down the Puy Mary where they can enjoy the 360° view. Those who prefer driving to the Pas de Peyrol will put on their walking shoes to reach the summit. A path has been designated to walk easily to the summit from the Pas de Peyrol. In 30 minutes, we climb on foot to find an orientation table and recognize the panoramic view. When you come back, we suggest you to taste a blueberry pie or a pachade in the chalet of the Pas de Peyrol.
7 glacier valleys surround the emblematic pyramid of Cantal. Discover every locality, their cultural and natural appeals.
- The valley of Aspre, Bertrande and the Maronne : through those valleys, a road goes through landscapes of Cantal to one of the "most beautiful village of France", Salers.
- The valley of the river Cère : this valley starts from Le Lioran to reach Aurillac. The road between these two cities allows many departures for walkings and great viewpoints on mountains.
- Jordanne valley : this valley is the favorite one for riders. From Aurillac, a road crosses villages of Saint-Simon, Velzic, Saint-Cirgues-de-Jordanne to Mandailles-Saint-Julien which is at foot of the Puy Mary. The last difficulty is to ride to the Pas de Peyrol. Mandailles is a quiet village where a holiday rent in a house of character is a typical stay in Cantal.
- The valley of Mars : this valley is the deepest one, and starts down the Puy Mary. Many walks are very nice to discover if you have your holiday rent near Le Vaulmier, Le Falgoux or Saint Vincent de Salers.
Access to the Puy Mary
The road to the Pas de Peyrol est opened from the 1st of may to the 31st of october. A car park is available during summer, the price is 4€.
In summer, a shuttle makes Mandailles-Saint-Julien- Le Claux – Dienne – Le Falgoux. The round trip est at 1.50€.
Many I-sites give information about activities around the Puy Mary, the access, the history and a shop where you can bring back souvenirs.
