Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux (Prudhomat)

Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux – an imposing and impressive castle !

Amputated of its defensive entrance and drawbridge in 1793, partially dismantled and its archives stolen, the castle avoided total demolition in 1844 thanks to the intervention of the Prefect of Lot and Inspector Calvet of the recently created Commission of Historic Monuments. Alas, it fell victim to a major fire at the beginning of 1851 which destroyed most of the 17th century transformations.

Classed as a listed building in 1862, the ruined castle was finally bought in 1896 by the man who saved it, Jean Mouliérat. Castelnau was re-born thanks to Jean Mouliérat, a famous tenor voice at the Opéra-Comique de Paris. A native of Vers near Cahors, his fortune allowed him to buy the castle, restore it and furnish it with objets d’art. He spent the last 30 years of his life embellishing it and giving it a new lease of life. He amassed a large, very diverse collection of furniture, paintings, tapestries, statues and objets d'art from all periods, as well as a remarkable lapidary collection. In accordance with his wishes, the apartments that can be visited today contain all the furniture and objets d’art arranged as he asked.
