Cahors

Cahors – 2,000 years of history

Cahors and its vineyards

Cahors 1

At the heart of the South-West, the Cahors appellation enchants wine lovers and connoisseurs with its Malbec grape variety, a longtime favourite of kings, notably at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II in 1152.

The reputation of Cahors wine continued to grow and during the following centuries it became widely-known in the Americas, Germany, the Netherlands and above all in Russia where the Tsars adopted it as their ceremonial wine and the Orthodox Church as communion wine.

Unfortunately in around 1880, Cahors wine died out for over half a century as a result of the phylloxera crisis. Unlike other French vines, Malbec did not take to the new rootstock and it was several years before the problem was finally solved by the University of Montpellier.

Today, the Cahors wine-growing area has not stopped carving an international reputation for itself linked to its emblematic Malbec grape. Wine tourism is on the increase every year with red Cahors AOP (PDO) and Coteaux du Quercy red, white and rosé wines.
