The small town of Verneuil d’Avre et d’Iton, tucked away in the south of the Eure region, has an exceptional heritage dating back to the heart of the Middle Ages. The exceptionally fine Art and History Town is a great destination for a day out or a holiday, alone or with others, to discover its well-preserved buildings.
Founded around 1100 by Henry I, Duke of Normandy and King of England, the town of Verneuil was an important stronghold guarding the southern borders of Normandy. The fortified town surrounded by ramparts and ditches featured a castle, now destroyed, and the Tour Grise, the keep which now houses a permanent exhibition about the era of the Dukes of Normandy, justice in the Middle Ages and the Battle of Verneuil. Verneuil has also conserved non-military buildings from this period built of local ‘grison’ stone and timber-framed. Later, nobles and people from the upper middle classes came to live in the town, illustrated by the sumptuous mansions and superb half-timbered houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
