Roc aux Sorciers
Roc aux Sorciers and its prehistoric sculpted frieze
Angles-sur-l’Anglin, one of the ""Loveliest Villages in France"", has a rare piece of history which is closed to the public for conservation reasons : the prehistoric sculpted wall carvings of the Roc aux Sorciers dating from the Magdalenian Era 15,000 years ago. The 20 metre long frieze is the only one of its kind in the world. It was discovered in 1950 and is classed as one of the most important sites of Palaeolithic Art – a « Lascaux of Sculpture ».
The Roc aux Sorciers Visitor Centre houses an innovative replica of the site, combining educational displays and a multimedia show.
First, you learn about the history of the site and can test your knowledge of how man lived during Magdalenian times. Next a 3D film projected onto 30 metres of reconstituted rock accompanied by sound effects, plunges you into the atmosphere of that far distant time. Finally, you get to discover a replica of the frieze with comments by archaeologists. You are free to look at and touch the frieze to understand it better !
