If you're a nature lover, the Parc Naturel Régional de l'Avesnois offers idyllic landscapes of hedged farmland, forests and charming little villages. It's the perfect place for Hiking or cycling. Local flavors take pride of place, from the famous Maroilles, a strong cheese that is the region's emblem, to carbonade flamande, a traditional beef dish simmered in beer.
Oise is renowned for its historical heritage. You can visit the Château de Chantilly, an architectural jewel nestled in the heart of a sumptuous park, Beauvais Cathedral with its dazzling stained-glass windows, or the Palais de Compiègne, a majestic royal residence. The Parc Naturel Régional Oise - Pays de France is a haven of peace where you can get away from it all on foot or by bike. Or opt for a boat trip through the marshes of Sacy-le-Grand, an unspoilt natural site with an incredible wealth of flora and fauna.
One of the main attractions of the Pas-de-Calais is the Côte d'Opale, with its sandy beaches, impressive cliffs and charming little ports. The two Capes (Cap Gris-Nez and Cap Blanc-Nez) offer breathtaking views. For nature-lovers, the Parc Naturel Régional des Caps et Marais d'Opale is a green haven of preserved spaces and numerous animal and plant species. Taste local specialities, such as "flamiche" with Maroilles or "potjevleesch", and enjoy the region's friendly atmosphere.
The Somme is famous for its historic sites from the 1st World War and its splendid natural landscapes. The Baie de Somme, one of Europe's most beautiful estuaries, will charm you with its vast stretches of sand and chalk cliffs. It's also a birdwatcher's paradise, with thousands of migratory birds. While you're here, try ficelle picarde, a savoury pancake speciality, or macarons d'Amiens, delicious little almond cakes.
