What to see and do at the Château de Sully-sur-loire   

Sully is a château constantly seeking new decors. The imposing fortress belonged to the family of the descendants of the Duc de Sully for 4 four centuries before being bought by the Conseil Départemental du Loiret.

An architectural masterpiece from the Middle Ages, the castle hosted the court of Pépin le Bref in the 8th century. Even if Henri IV never visited, it can count Joan of Arc, Louis XIV and Anne of Austria accompanied by Mazarin, and Voltaire among its illustrious guests.

The castle suffered from several hiccups of history : the Revolution of 1789, a fire in 1918 and bombing in 1940…Since then, the building has been modified many times but you can still admire the four circular towers and the 14th century wooden pointed-arch vaulted ceiling hidden away at the top of the building. This exceptionally well-preserved work is most impressive both for its size and appearance !

The Psyche wall tapestry, a work comprising six 17th century wall hangings, and the marble tomb of Sully and his wife are absolute musts as is the rare collection of furniture and objets d’art from the ‘Mobilier National’ (state furniture collection) which enhances rooms superbly decorated in the style of the period.

Sully is a venue for regular and quite surprising events including a murder mystery game, candlelit tours and exploring secret rooms. Music lovers should note that every year between May and June the château and grounds are the backdrop for concerts, part of the famous Festival de Musique de Sully et du Loiret.
