The Citadel of Belfort
Explore a unique, remarkable place with all the family on a history walk around the Citadel and enjoy breathtaking views of the town.
The Citadel, which dominates the town and is said to be impregnable, is the result of several centuries of architectural development. Reworked and reinforced over time, today it still bears the mark of the illustrious men who contributed to its influence, like the famous military engineer Vauban, General Haxo and Colonel Denfert-Rochereau who tested the resistance of the fortifications during the 103 days of attack by the Prussian army (1870-1871). Walk up through the paved tunnel and the drawbridge gate to the main courtyard.
There, if you wish, you can have a gourmet break at the Café-Restaurant which serves traditional Franche-Comté dishes at lunchtime. Continue your visit on the panoramic terrace to experience a 360° view of Belfort ! Admire the whole of the fortress as well as many other forts, the town of Belfort and the southern Vosges.
The Citadel never sleeps and is open all year round with a varied programme of activities. In summer the Citadel goes back into a period of history during the Festival d’Histoire Vivante, when you can encounter people re-enacting scenes in period dress ! Activities are organized for all the family with a special area for children with educational games.
