The archaeological site of Bibracte at the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan
This amazing place is located in the villages of Saint-Léger-Sous-Beuvray in Saône-et-Loire, Glux-en-Glenne and Larochemillay in Nièvre. Plunge right into the heart of the history of the Aedui, a Gallic tribe, and their ancient capital. Visit the Museum of Celtic Civilisation with an audioguide and discover an impressive collection of everyday objects and documents, reconstitutions, models and film shows. Innovative multi-media tools reveal the history of Bibracte and the work of archaeologists. Archaeology workshops for children aged 6 -12 allow them to be archaeologists for a day at the excavation site (trowel in hand, they are introduced to excavating skills and the scientific approach). A short distance from the museum, experience typical Gallic food using replica tableware from the period (knives and spoons, but no forks) and with barley beer brewed exclusively for Bibracte. After your meal, walk or take the shuttle bus to Mont-Beuvray to explore the Gallic ‘oppidum’ and the current excavations, helped by information boards around the site. Take a trip way back in time on the largest archaeological site dedicated to the Celtic world ! This lovely walk features the remains of the Gallic town, centuries-old trees and superb panoramic views from the top of Mont-Beuvray. Several unusual activities are available including a 2-hour tree-climbing session with a qualified instructor to explore Mont-Beuvray forest from the treetops. You can also go on a forest walk with a difference accompanied by birds of prey flying freely around you and two qualified falconers !
