Ognon
L'Ognon – a paradise for fishermen in Haute-Saône
Haute-Saône is characterised by a large network of fishing rivers, including the Ognon, a magnificent 200km long river which rises at Château-Lambert, on the southern side of the Vosges mountains (at 904m altitude). The second half of its path serves as the border between the neighbouring départements of Doubs, then Jura, before flowing into the Saône in Côte-d'Or.
Sporting enthusiasts can choose to descend the Ognon Valley by canoe rather than by car with 150km of tranquil river to paddle along and lots of fun little weirs to slide down until it meets the Saône.
This peaceful, secret river is of great interest to fishermen for its wide variety of fish. It is heavily populated with trout and grayling and its lower reaches are well-known for predatory fish.
Vallée de l'Ognon and the character villages of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté
As the river meanders along it passes character heritage villages of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté including :
- Villersexel, the scene of a terrible battle during the 1870 Franco-Prussian War.
- Montbozon, famous for its delicious biscuits which Louis XVI was very fond of and which have the slogan ‘King of Desserts and Dessert of Kings’.
- Pesmes, one of the « Loveliest Villages in France », is a small, picturesque, listed village characterised by its medieval fortifications of towers and ramparts, beautiful old houses, its Château des Forges castle and church of Saint-Hilaire.
