Les Lumières de Stanislas

An extremely pleasant stay in a large, well-appointed and centrally located apartment.

We travelled by train from Manchester and walked downhill from the station to the apartment. It only takes about 10 minutes. We were slightly alarmed to find no one there to meet us when we arrived (it was raining), but we didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes.

"Les Lumières de Stanislas" is a loft-style apartment with its own private entrance. It's situated a stone's throw from Place Stanislas and the beautiful Parc de la Pépinière. The living area is accessed from the entrance hall via a wide, spiral staircase. The living area and WC are on the lower floor, the bedroom and bathroom on the upper. The two areas are connected by an open stairwell with metal treads, but no handrail. This may be a serious safety concern if you are elderly (like us) and/or have balance problems (or like a drink in the evening...).

The apartment was very clean. Plenty of towels are provided, as are bathrobes and slippers. The living area has some nice personal touches. Some of Sebastian's chocolate and a couple of bottles of wine were also there as "welcome" gifts. The kitchen is well-equipped, although we felt it needs more crockery and cutlery so the dishwasher doesn't have to be turned on every other day (who wants to do the dishes while on holiday?)

Neither of us had visited Nancy before, so we didn't really have much of an idea of what the town had to offer (despite looking at some YouTube videos). We even thought we might have to hire a car if we'd seen most of what Nancy had to offer by the end of our first week. Absolutely no need! The town is full of museums and galleries and is renowned for its Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture (visit the Musée de l'École de Nancy, the Villa Majorelle and Rue Felix Faure for some stunning examples of the former). The Musée des Beaux-Arts (on Place Stansilas) is highly recommended - we went twice. We even spent an evening at the Opera (again, on Place Stanislas). Details of some interesting self-guided walking tours are available from the Tourist Office, also on Place Stansilas. And did I mention the restaurants, of which we were told Nancy has approximately 700? Visit the Excelsior for the food (and its architecture). We also had great meals at Bastion and Le Palais Gourmand and, for meat lovers, at Le Nouveau Abbatoir on the other side of the canal (large portions, excellent value). But if you do fancy a spot of self-catering, don't forget to visit the covered market.

We would like to return, but won't until a handrail is fitted in the stairwell. Unfortunately, it's only a matter of time before someone stumbles and falls and is seriously injured.
