Vesoul, a little-known town of Eastern France was launched into the spotlight one day by one of the most illustrious singers of the 20th century. In 1968 after a short stay in the town, Jacques Brel wrote and sang ""T'a voulu voir Vesoul, et on a vu Vesoul"" propelling the town into the collective memory of French people.
Whether you arrive in Vesoul by car or by bike, the first curiosity you see is the 378m high hill of Notre-Dame-de-la-Motte protectively overlooking the town. Walk up to the top to enjoy one of the best views of Vesoul – you won’t regret it !
Vesoul – its parks and English-style garden, architectural heritage and festivals
To really get to know Vesoul, take time to explore its wonderful historic and architectural heritage, its parks, English-style garden and its unfailing energy, particularly during the Foire de la Sainte-Catherine, a tradition dating from the Middle Ages and celebrated every 25th November with about 700 stands and exhibitors from all over Eastern France.
Another event in Vesoul is the Festival International des Cinémas d’Asie which takes place every year for one week at the end of January.
The town is the birthplace of the actress Edwige Feuillère, who gave her name to its theatre, one of the largest in the east of France.
In October, the town celebrates French-language songs during the Jacques Brel Festival.
On the edge of the town is the start of the Trace du Courlis, a cycle path which links up with the Echapée Bleue VR50 cycle route. The V50 runs from Luxembourg to Lyon and crosses 140km of the département, mostly along the Petite Saône.
Lac de Vesoul – Vaivre is a great place for outdoor activities like sailing, rowing, fishing, cycling and walking. There is also Ludolac water park, a beach, tennis courts, a bird reserve and a campsite.
