The Sundgau
Southern Alsace or Sundgau, Mulhouse, Altkirch and Ferrette.

Sundgau in the south of Alsace at the meeting point with Germany and Switzerland is distinguished by its fine half-timbered farmhouses, lakes, rolling countryside and traditions.
The name Sundgau comes from Alemannic German meaning « southern county », Sundgow in Old French, and its capital is Altkirch.
This hilly region of large forests is dotted with traditional villages of half-timbered houses like Hirsingue, Ferrette and its castle, Oltingue and its Musée Paysan, Altkirch and its Musée Sundgauvien.
Mulhouse, gateway to Alsace is a must for engineering enthusiasts with the Schlumberger Motor Museum, Cité du Train and Musée de Peinture sur Etoffes, not forgetting the Zoo de Mulhouse, a great day out for all the family.
Route de la Carpe Frite
The Route de la Carpe Frite is a culinary trail of traditional Alsace restaurants among a myriad of fishing lakes serving fried carp, a local speciality. The castle at Ferrette overlooks the village which is a lovely place to visit in summer with narrow streets and fine views. Incidentally, Prince Albert de Monaco still holds the title of Count of Ferrette.
Sundgau is a great destination for a family weekend or holiday with many opportunities for cycle-touring, horse riding and other outdoor sports. "
