AVESNOIS REGIONAL NATURE PARK
In the south of the Nord department, at the crossroads of the Aisne and Belgium, lies an unspoilt area of hedged farmland, forests and streams, also known as "La Petite Suisse du Nord", you in the Avesnois.
Avesnois Regional Nature Park: a biodiversity reserve
The Avesnois Regional Nature Park is one of the largest Biodiversity reserves in the Nord Pas-de-Calais region.
Along the paths, look for these oratories like a treasure hunt, and in the heart of the villages, admire the music kiosks and water mills, so many heritage treasures that make it so interesting.
The houses, often built of bluestone with slate roofs, are an integral part of the landscape.
What to do in the Avesnois? Not to be missed!
The Avesnois offers a wide range of cultural activities:
- Sites of remembrance such as the New Zealand Liberation Museum or Fort Leveau ;
- Fortified cities: Le Quesnoy, Maubeuge or the Musverre, which immerses you in the glassmaking tradition of the 19th century; the Forum Antique de Bavay, an archaeological site featuring Roman remains.

First and foremost, there's Hiking: over 1,000 km of marked trails criss-cross the region.
Cycling is becoming increasingly popular, with the development of the NœudsVélo network and the new Scandibérique Eurovéloroute.
In Ferrière la Grande, the Relais Eco Vélo, a former railway station converted into a group holiday cottage, is also an FFC-approved mountain bike base (bike hire on site).

The cuisine of the Avesnois is warm and friendly, with local dishes that can be shared at home or in an estaminet.
You'll often find Maroilles, the local cheese, raw or cooked (flamiches, sauces...), accompanied by a local beer.
