Grand Site Occitanie Perpignan Méditerrannée

A more recent, but equally glorious past has made it the epicenter of artistic encounters (Maillol, Picasso), a certain Salvador Dali even called it the “Center of the World”.

Perpignan: the starting point for a fabulous journey through time.

perpignan-Méditerranée tautavel

In its heart of town there are still religious or military buildings, the Castillet, current Casa Pairal museum, the Saint-Jean or Campo Santo cloister-cemetery, the Powder Magazine and the Sea Lodge as well as the former bishopric, witnesses of a past flourishing.

Perpignan-Méditerranée is at the heart of a territory rich in discoveries. The cave of Tautavel, occupied for 700,000 years, and its eponymous prehistoric museum are unmissable.

Testimony to tragic moments of the 20th century, the Memorial in Rivesaltes invites contemplation

What to see, what to do in Perpignan?

Le Palais des rois de Majorque à Perpignan

Visit the Palace of the Kings of Majorca.

Did you know ? Between 1276 and 1349, Perpignan was the continental capital of the kingdom of Majorca.

The Palace of the Kings of Majorca, a Gothic-style fortress completed in 1309, bears witness to the wealth of this small Mediterranean state. Its imposing silhouette dominates the medieval heart of the city. The oldest part of the palace and its hanging gardens host events and concerts during the summer. At the top of the Tribute Tower, admire the view of the Roussillon plain, the Canigó, the Albères massif, the Mediterranean.

Admire the Catalan boats.

15 minutes from Perpignan: the sea, its beaches and… its Catalan boats. These have the age of the Mediterranean civilization. They were an integral part of the coastal landscape until the 1960s.

Today, you will be able to come across their elegant lateen sails again during regattas organized by associations of enthusiasts. On the classified site of Anse de Paulilles (30 minutes from Perpignan), visit the Atelier des Barques which inventories, restores and promotes this heritage of Catalan maritime culture.
