La gastronomie sarthoise
It is impossible to talk about Le Mans without thinking about its famous Rillettes du Mans, whose recipe has been improved over the years to make it the finest and best-tasting rillettes of all !
Le Mans and its famous rillettes
Sarthe is also the home of an AOC white wine and famous Petit Sablé biscuits.
Rillettes du Mans, born in the 15th century, which Rabelais referred to as « brown pig jam (!) », became very popular in the 19th century. It is made from pork cooked slowly in fat, seasoned with salt and pepper. Rillettes from Sarthe are tasty and succulent.
Jasnières the grand wine from Sarthe
Jasnières is the best-known of Sarthe wines. It is a small wine-growing region which runs along the Loir Valley in the south of Sarthe. Henri IV loved this nectar and served it at the royal castle of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. With a rich bouquet, fresh and mineral, Jasnières can also suggest citrus peel, honey, acacia or hawthorn. It can be laid down for decades when it will continue to improve.
