Châteaubriant : a warm welcome, a long history and a bright future.
10 centuries of history told in one of the oldest castles of the historic Duchy of Brittany. Believe me, that’s worth stopping for ! The castle is in Châteaubriant, a town with a very rich and varied heritage. Stroll around the pretty narrow streets of the medieval town with half-timbered houses and towers worthy of grand châteaux.
As well as its original atmosphere, the town goes out of its way to welcome tourists with many specialised attractions and a genuine desire to improve the environment. The town is surrounded by verdant countryside dotted with woods and lakes, manor houses and chapels, offering a wonderful change of scenery.
There are lots more delightful places to explore in the area around this charming medieval town including cultural attractions, heritage buildings, good food and scenery typical of north-east Loire-Atlantique.
Nature enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors can enjoy walking or cycling through the surrounding countryside to recharge the batteries after sightseeing in the town. For a truly unforgettable experience, take a trip in a hot-air balloon at dawn !
An exceptional castle, which gave its name to the town
Châteaubriant castle is impossible to miss when you arrive in the town. It offers a varied programme of cultural events for all the family between April and October : games, shows and music. Fun themed workshops are run for children in which they learn how to defend a fortress, how to be aspiring archaeologists and even how to make a medieval meal !
The castle is a surprising and uncommon blend of a medieval fortress and an elegant Renaissance château covering ten centuries of history. In the Middle Ages, it was an important stronghold in defending the Duchy of Brittany against the Kingdom of France. The keep, ramparts and buildings around the medieval courtyard illustrate the power and importance of the fortress and the mark it left on French history.
The département of Loire-Atlantique decided to leave the castle open to visitors free-of-charge all year round. It also runs numerous exhibitions throughout the year for local inhabitants and visitors.
