Montagne Noire - at the crossroads of Aude, Haute-Garonne, Hérault and Tarn
The Montagne Noire stands at the junction of 4 départements : Aude, Haute Garonne, Hérault and Tarn. Its steep northern slopes are in Tarn, covered with dense forests of oak, beech, pine and fir.
Part of the Montagne Noire is in the Haut Languedoc Regional Natural Park where you can also find the Pic de Nore, the highest point of Tarn (1,211m) with panoramic views as far as the Pyrenees.
A destination deep in the countryside and steeped in history.
The waters from the Montagne Noire feed the Canal du Midi built by Pierre Paul Riquet in the reign of Louis XIV to link Toulouse to the Mediterranean. A succession of three waterfall lakes were created and fed by channels. The third lake is Lac de Saint Ferréol where the machinery is sited to control the level of water in the Canal. The channel in the village of Cammazes runs through the Voute Vauban tunnel then into the Laudot stream. It is a lovely place for a walk. A museum has been opened in the old engineer’s home, set in English-style grounds which tells the story of the Canal du Midi. The Bassin de Saint Ferréol is a family resort with plenty of activities including swimming, walking, cycling, outdoor activity centre, pedaloes, treetop adventure trail, mountain biking, canoeing and sailing.
Mazamet, at the foot of the Montagne Noire developed during the 18th century thanks to the wool and sheepskin industry made possible by the proximity of the Rivers Arnette and Thoré where the skins and wool were washed. This history can be seen at the Musée du Textile at Labastide Rouairoux, a living museum where the machinery is still operational, preserving the memory of «Toiles de la Montagne Noire », fabrics which are still made by several local firms.
Medieval Festival of the Albigensian Crusade
« La Passerelle » is a 140m long aerial footbridge runs across the Gorges de Arnette and Thoré 70 metres above the ground.
From here you can discover the medieval village of Hautpoul, one of the last remaining Cathar sites in Tarn. The « Albigensian Crusade » was an important event in medieval Occitania. The village organises a big medieval celebration including a grand banquet every year at the end of July.
Another place steeped in history is Sorèze with its abbey school and Museum of Dom Robert. The abbey school is now a museum in which visitors are plunged into the everyday life of 19th century pupils. The astonishing Musée Dom Robert displays beautiful contemporary tapestries glorifying nature created by Dom Robert as well as many 20th century tapestries.
The area is an ideal destination for families and friends with lots to do and see. Carcassonne, Toulouse, Albi and Castres are all within easy reach and the waters of the Canal du Midi start their journey here. Swimming, walking, mountain biking, canyoning… everything is on hand for a great holiday !

Sporting family members set off to the top of Montagne Noire to enjoy the magnificent view while the others wait for them to enjoy breakfast on the patio in the morning sunshine. After that everyone goes off on the sign-posted trail to the Cascade du Mouscaillou, children are eager to enjoy a picnic, play in the river and try to catch crayfish. Then it’s back for a swim in the pool, ball games and fun in the sand followed by an evening barbecue ! "
In the footsteps of the Cathars of the Tarn
The Musée Arthur Batut and its open-air festival are a super way to discover the history of Labruguière, unless you prefer a guided tour. See Castres from the water on a cruise aboard the ‘Coche d'eau’ to the Parc de Gourjade, great fun for children, then go back to enjoy the Tuesday producers’ market.
Donkey rides for children and meditation for all at nearby Pouzaque. Pony rides at Labruguière. The Museum of Wooden Toys and Games is a fun place to visit below the Cathar village of Hautpool. After visiting the village, go across the footbridge and then back via the medieval gardens.
