Biarritz, a breath of fresh air
The sound of its staunchly Basque name is enough to stir up enthusiasm for Biarritz, one of the most emblematic towns of Pays Basque, the region in the far south-west of France which shares a border, traditions and way of life with Spain.
Situated just below the Landes region, Biarritz and its adjacent neighbours of Anglet and Bayonne form a conurbation well-known for age-old festivals and unique gastronomy. Biarritz is also an Atlantic port with breathtaking scenery of cliffs, rocky islets and beaches where the ocean gives vent to all its character and ardour.
An imperial and contemporary construction at the same time
With lots of local gourmet specialities and activities, Biarritz is ideal for a restful, fascinating holiday. The Basque spirit is present in every building on every street of this warmly welcoming town. Spain, Saint-Sebastian to be exact, is only 50km away after Saint-Jean-de-Luz then Hendaye and its River Bidassoa which marks the border. To the north lie the world-famous beaches of Hossegor, Seignosse and Vieux-Boucau towards Capbreton, from where a beautiful strip of sand runs as far as the Arcachon estuary.
On the Boulevard Maréchal-Leclerc opposite the town’s marina, the church of Sainte-Eugénie brings a Neo-Gothic touch to the charming sea front. Built between 1898 and 1903 at the behest of Gaston Larre in place of an old chapel of the same name dating from 1856, its wonderful architecture makes it look much older than it really is. The crypt of Saint-Eugénie, a listed monument since 1981, has been a venue for artistic and cultural events for many years, giving a new lease of life to this emblematic place.
A contemporary church and an imperial chapel
The Imperial Chapel is in Romano-Byzantine and Hispano-Moorish styles and dates from 1964. It was built at the request of Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III and Empress of France. Born in Granada, Eugénie saw the construction of the chapel as a way of paying tribute to her roots, but also of honouring the Mexican Black Madonna, Notre-Dame de Guadalupe, an important Catholic figure in South America."
How to come ?
Biarritz is accessible from Toulouse via the A63 / E70 by exiting on the D810 at exit 4, direction Biarritz Airport. To head towards the city center, then take the D260 and follow Boulevard du Général-de-Gaulle.
