Since its discovery in 1940, Lascaux is considered the finest painted cave complex in the world, a masterpiece of cave art in the Vézère Valley. The exceptional site is a historic monument and UNESCO World heritage Site.
The new discovery centre is the result of three years of work by Ateliers des Fac-Similés du Périgord, and invites visitors to experience the emotion of discovering the cave, to study it, to question it and to think about the environmental and cultural context in which it was created.
The half-buried building, built at the foot of Lascaux hill, blends perfectly into the local countryside. Visitors go in through its gigantic glass façade and are guided into a universe created by technical prowess.
Firstly, the shape : there are no straight walls, a series of convoluted halls lead to the heart of the 8,000m² building with a crack running the length of it to give the impression of a gash in the hillside or a prehistoric fold recalling the passing of time….
Secondly, the content : the different, modern, minimalist-style spaces are equipped with the latest digital tools (augmented reality, 3D screen, etc…).

Lascaux is at Montignac-en-Périgord in Dordogne.
A guide meets you in the reception area, gives you visitor equipment (NB. specially adapted tablets are available for children aged over 5), and then stays with you throughout your visit. Other guides are present in the themed halls :
