Gerberoy
Gerberoy One of the « Loveliest Villages in France »
Perched on a small hill between cereal-growing plateaux and leafy countryside in the Pays de Bray, Gerberoy is a flower-filled village just 30 minutes from Beauvais. One of the « Loveliest Villages in France », its idyllic, romantic atmosphere makes it a perfect place to wander around.
Gerberoy is a village where time has stood still and with less than 100 inhabitants, it is also one of the tiniest villages in France ! It had been besieged, burned and destroyed on several occasions during its turbulent past and it was not until the painter Le Sidaner arrived on the scene, that this little village became well-known far beyond the borders of Picardy !
Time seems to have stood still in the village of narrow cobbled streets, cob-walled and colourful half-timbered cottages, hollyhocks and ancient stones. Nicknamed the village of a thousand roses, it is full of idyllic spots : Ruelle Saint-Amant and its hazel trees, the collegiate church, ramparts, Tour Charlemagne and even a mini vineyard of 1,612m² on the hill above the village.
Gerberoy also has two beautiful gardens to visit, one artistic, the other poetic !
The Jardin Henri Le Sidaner covers 4,000m² laid out in three terraces in front of the house which nestles beneath the collegiate church. Features include a rose garden, rampart walk, tower, pergola, balustrades and statues, all designed by the artist in minute detail down to the little studio where he did his sketches.
The Jardin des Ifs is a poetic, centuries-old garden of an 18th century house. Opened to the public since 2016, it is classed as a ‘Jardin Remarquable’ with an ‘Arbre Remarquable’. The terraced garden is typical of the classical style favoured by Olivier de Serres. Its graphic, evergreen design comprises giant yew trees with amazing, impressive shapes like the one in the centre of the garden. Aged between 300 and 400 years old, it is known as the ‘igloo-yew’ as a whole family can stand inside it !
La Fête des Roses !
Every year for one day in June the village celebrates its Fete des Roses when visitors stroll around the village to discover varieties of old roses, visit artists’ studios, take part in lots of activities, drink local lemonade and maybe go home with a beautiful, fragrant ‘Gerberoy’ rose.
What to see and do near Gerberoy ?
Another garden well worth stopping to see is that of the Franco-Dutch artist André Van-Beek at Saint Paul, 25 minutes from Gerberoy. This sensory garden, designed like a life-size impressionist painting, is the result of a huge project of over twenty years work. The most ‘instagrammable’ spot in the garden is a little blue bridge over a water lily pond where a pink and green boat gently floats. The idyll continues along a network of paths past clouds of flowers, a copper-trunked dogwood, gunnera with leaves as big as umbrellas, a thousand dahlias, three hundred hydrangeas and a hundred and fifty water lilies.
« In one of the tiny streets, we came across the ‘salon de thé de Sarah’, an exquisite tea room that I recommend 1000% ! Everything is home-made. I had a Himalayan rose tea – excellent !» Gîtes de France Oise
