Cathédrale Saint Etienne Auxerre
A 13th century masterpiece of Gothic art, the Cathedral of Saint-Etienne is of relatively modest dimensions but of great elegance. It is the fifth church to be built on the magnificent urban site overlooking the River Yonne. The 11th century church was demolished to make way for the Gothic building, except for the crypt and apse-chapel which is decorated with frescoes including a rare depiction of Christ on horseback dating from the end of the 11th century.
Construction of the current cathedral began in 1215 and took almost three centuries. It has a large treasure collection of 400 items bequeathed to the parish of Saint-Etienne in 1869 by Germain Dru, a local collector. Part of the collection is on show to the public. The stained-glass windows (13th – 16th century) are of great interest. Follow the Circuit de Cadet Roussel trail marked on the ground to explore the historic centre of Auxerre.
