Planche des Belles Filles
A curious name !
At 1,148 metres high, Planche des Belles Filles is one of the highest points of Haute-Saône just behind Ballon de Servance (1,216 metres). It is located in the Ballon des Vosges Regional Natural Park.
Planche des Belles Filles takes its name from an old legend which says that during the Thirty Years’ War, young girls from the neighbouring village threw themselves in a lake to escape from cruel Swedish mercenaries (a walk along a signposted footpaths leads to the places mentioned in the legend).
Metallic mineral deposits formed 40 million years ago were exploited during the 15th and 18th centuries in mines dug into the mountainside.
During the Second World War, a thousand ‘maquisards’ took refuge on the mountain before launching an attack in the valley.
Planche des Belles Filles - a family ski resort
La Planche des Belles Filles is a well-known resort for families, offering lots of activities in summer (walking trails, mountain biking, trail running, tubing, grass scooter, etc.) and in winter (6 downhill ski pistes, 23km of cross-country ski pistes linking Ballon d'Alsace, handiski equipment, toboggan piste, tubing, 3 snowshoe trails, equipment hire shop).
Planche des Belles Filles is inextricably linked to the Tour de France. Froome, Nibali, Aru … are just some of the champions who have raised their arms in victory at the top of this now legendary finish. It has to be said that the gradient on the final part of this 5km climb is enough to challenge even the most accomplished cyclists !
At any time of year, the amenities at the resort allow visitors to have a rest and something to eat and drink at over 1,100m altitude, and enjoy wonderful panoramic views of the plain and the Vosges Mountains.
