Chauvet cave
Nestled in the heart of the spectacular Ardèche countryside, the Grotte Chauvet is a prehistoric wonder that offers a fascinating journey back in time. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cave reveals rock paintings of exceptional beauty and complexity, testifying to the artistic talent of early man.
An Exceptional Site
Grotte Chauvet, also known as Grotte Chauvet-Pont-d 'Arc, was discovered in 1994 by speleologists. What they found inside stunned the world: hundreds of rock paintings dating back over 30,000 years, depicting animals such as bison, horses, lions and rhinoceroses, executed with striking precision and realism.
The Grotte Chauvet offers a valuable window into the daily life of early man in the Upper Palaeolithic. The detailed wall paintings, as well as the handprints and prehistoric tools found on site, provide invaluable information about the culture, spirituality and artistic abilities of our ancestors.
Due to the fragility of the cave paintings, Grotte Chauvet is not open to the public. However, a faithful replica, the Caverne du Pont d'Arc, has been built nearby to enable visitors to discover these prehistoric treasures under controlled, preserved conditions.
