Gorges du Tarn
Stretching 53km across Lozère and part of Aveyron, the Gorges du Tarn are a geological marvel, patiently carved out by nature over millions of years. To explore these gorges is to delve into the planet's memory, at the heart of a timeless geological adventure.
This limestone canyon, 400 to 600 metres deep, is the result of erosion by the Tarn river, which rises on Mont Lozère, just a few kilometers from the gorge.
As you explore, you pass through layers of rock that represent the geological ages the Earth has passed through. Renowned for their outstanding natural sites, the gorges du Tarn are a paradise for hikers, who will find challenges to match their ambitions, and rewards that amply justify the effort, such as several outstanding natural cirques and masterly viewpoints.
But the gorges can also be crossed by canoe. You'll find courses for all levels, with some very calm zones to relax in, and a few rapids to spice up the adventure. For caving enthusiasts, there are numerous caves open for exploration, with associations on hand to guide you.
Whether you want to swim, hike, canoe, kayak, discover charming villages or forgotten castles, go climbing or caving, discover the Aven Armand caves or just relax, the Tarn gorges promise a wide variety of pleasures, in the heart of a natural site of ageless beauty.
