If the word tapestry puts you in mind of dusty old castles, then think again as the opposite is definitely true at Aubusson in Creuse ! Aubusson tapestry is inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, which shows the importance of the centuries old art which has forged a new identity over recent years, much to our delight !
Visit the ‘Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie d’Aubusson’ to learn everything there is to know about the story of Aubusson tapestry. This heritage centre, the only one of its kind in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, seeks to preserve, enhance and promote this great craft !
Open to the public since July 2016, the centre is an innovative museum with an up-to-date, extremely informative lay-out where children and adults can discover lots of interesting things about the art of tapestry-making : working with a living raw material, from fleece to wool, from cardboard to weaving and so on.
The Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie allows visitors to admire its great diversity of tapestries : wall hangings which tell a story, the Royal tapestry workshops at Aubusson, 20th century renovation and contemporary art. If this is all new to you, don’t panic, you can book a guided tour of the museum ! As well as exhibitions, the heritage centre runs themed workshops and alternative art events.
