The Golden Isles
In the far south of Provence and the Var, between Toulon and Corsica, the islands of Hyères, also known as the "Golden Islands", are part of the Port-Cros National Park, the only French national park to be both land and sea.
Escape to the Golden Islands
Boasting a particularly mild climate all year round, the islands are a prime destination for water sports on the Mediterranean, as well as for observing the flora and fauna, which are very well protected in this area.
The largest of the four islands, Porquerolles, is located 10 minutes from the Giens peninsula. Its coastline of fine sandy beaches and turquoise waters is ideal for seaside activities. The island itself offers a wide range of outdoor activities, from hiking and mountain biking to scuba diving, as well as cultural discoveries at the village of Porquerolles and the botanical conservatory.
A little further east, the island of Port-Cros gives its name to the national park, thanks to its rich vegetation, sustained by the presence of several springs. With a steeper relief than the other Îles d'Or, Port-Cros is the perfect place to take a stroll and discover the fishermen's cottages and the many forts dotted around the island, each offering magnificent views.
Further east, the most easterly of the Hyères islands is Ile du Levant, almost as large as Porquerolles but almost entirely reserved for the army, although it does offer part of its territory to the village of Héliopolis, one of Europe's very first naturist villages on an island, which offers you the chance to live as close to nature as possible, notably by not providing public lighting, to better observe the starry sky. The island also boasts a UCPA center for scuba diving.
All these islands are accessible by boat from the Giens peninsula, the most southerly point of Provence, linked to the mainland by two roads with a geography unique in the world, and offering a very pleasant coastal area for relaxing or sporting walks.
