Ski resorts in the Massif du Sancy
The best-known ski resort of Puy-de-Dôme is without doubt Super-Besse (1,850m max. altitude) in the village of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, 50km from Clermont-Ferrand. With 27 pistes of increasing difficulty, 21 ski lifts and a 40km ski area, it is definitely the main resort of the Massif Central. It also has a free park and a speed skiing run. The resort is generally open between December and April. For a more family-friendly atmosphere, go to Chastreix, another resort on the slopes of Puy de Sancy, or to Mont-Dore which is directly accessible from Super-Besse via a ski tow. The resort of Mont-Dore straddles Mont Dore and Puy de Sancy, not far from the spa resort of La Bourboule. If you prefer cross-country skiing or snowshoe trekking, then the family resort of Picherande-Chareire is made for you. You can ski to Picherande from Super-Besse via the Col de la Geneste, a distance of 9km and enjoy a hot chocolate at the foot of the slopes of Super-Besse ! After that, spend the night in a chalet or B&B for a good night’s sleep before returning to the slopes.
Ski resorts on Mont Dore
Mont-Dore on the north side of Puy de Sancy is one of the oldest ski resorts in France. It was once so popular with celebrities like Coco Chanel and Colette that it was nicknamed the ‘Champs de Neige de Paris’ ! It is also one of the resorts with the highest snowfall in France, so you are guaranteed to find fresh snow. For cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledging for all the family, choose the resorts of Saulzet-le-Froid and La Bourboule. There are numerous rental properties for holidays or weekend breaks close to the ski slopes.
Ski resort of Livradois-Forez
It is also possible to go skiing to the east of Clermont-Ferrand ! The village of Saint-Anthème, dominated by the Monts du Forez, is home to the mid-mountain ski resort of Prabouré, which has several pistes for both downhill and cross-country skiing. The atmosphere in the resort is very friendly, far removed from the huge Alpine resorts which can sometimes feel like the Metro during the rush hour…
Cézallier ski area
The Parrot skiing area at Anzat-le-Luguet allows you to go cross-country skiing at very little cost. In fact, the winter sports resort of Cézallier is well-known for being one of the cheapest in France. The spectacular panorama from the top of the Cézallier plateau is well worth the climb either by cross-country skiing or with snowshoes. It’s the ultimate ‘no stress’ resort ! Easy to reach, no problems with parking, no long queues to hire skis or buy a ski pass : in short, you go almost straight onto the slopes for a day’s skiing in magnificent surroundings.
