The Rhône-Alpes region offers a wide range of landscapes. The water-rich Dombes and its myriad lakes stretches to the very outskirts of Lyon. to the west, there are the world-famous vineyards of the Rhône valley, whilst to the east stands the Mont-Blanc. The south is also worth a visit: the deep Ardèche gorge, the high plateaux of the Vercors, and the lavender fields of the Drôme. On the shoulders of the mighty Alps, more than 6,000 km of ski pistes await you in the largest ski complex in the world; in summer, the mountains reveal another facet: you can explore the lakes of the Vanoise, hike up to the Mont Aiguille, and wander amidst the Cévennes Ardèchoises.
This region is steeped in art and history: prehistoric caves, the mediaeval castle of the Duchy of Savoie in Chambéry, the Cistercian abbey of Aiguebelle in the Drôme, the Renaissance neighbourhood of Lyon. Your excursions are a great excuse to sample some of the region's culinary specialities: the gratin dauphinois, a raclette or a fondue, the Ravioles of Romans, cooked saucisson or tripe accompanied by a carafe of Beaujolais or of Côtes-du-Rhône.
