KARINE Authentique !

hug0 Great location, little communication
This is a simple, well-equipped gîte in a beautiful part of the country, with views of snow-capped peaks in the charming small town of Laruns. We visited in late March/early April and were very lucky with the weather: sunny but cool. You would definitely need to bring warm clothing at this time of year, especially if venturing out into the hills and mountains.
The gîte is situated on a steep, narrow street and parking can be quite difficult. Accommodation is all on the upper floor - the downstairs entrance is an open-plan games/storage area. The garden at the back is delightful, a sheltered sunny spot from which to watch the birds of prey as they soar around the nearby mountains.
The kitchen has all you could need, the seating/TV area is perfect, the bathroom and lavatory are clean with lots of hot water (shower only, no bath). There's a fantastic wood-burning stove which produces loads of heat on chilly evenings. The beds are a good size but the double is a bit uncomfortable when sleeping two people - you tend to roll together in the middle.
The only real downside was communication with the owner. I emailed well in advance to let him know that we were arriving at 4pm on Saturday. There was a very brief response saying that everything would be ready. No-one was there to greet us and eventually we tried the door, which proved to be unlocked. The key was on display on the ping-pong table. About half an hour later a lady arrived, told us she had left some eggs for us, and then disappeared.
I emailed the owner on the Friday - in French - to let him know our departure time and asking to settle the bill for linen, wood, cleaning etc. There was no response, and when the time came for us to leave no-one was there to take payment or check us out. I eventually left what I considered to be the correct payment, locked the front door and posted through the key through the letterbox.
It is now three days since we left, and I have not heard from the owner since.
