Chris Pleasant stay during summer
I booked the chambre Jean less than 24 hours beforehand, continuing the journey from a stay in the Dieppe era. It almost felt too good to be true - 16th century château, with Pointe du Hoc being a stone's throw away. But it turned out to be worth it: good breakfast, with a friendly owner.
The chambre Jean is located on the top floor which requires lugging your baggage up four flights of stairs, with even average-sized guests having to bend to enter the doorway. The room itself is otherwise perfectly fine for tall people, it's just the consequence of a building that's about half a millennium old (the original entryway looked like it would have been by ladder). It's the smallest room of the lot but it was perfect for my purposes: the bed was fine, it had a private bathroom with shower and a French-style breakfast was served every morning. The room does appear to heat up and cool down rather quickly on warm days (opening a window certainly helps), so I can imagine it becoming a bit draughty at cooler times of the year.
As was stated before, the D-Day invasion beaches are close by, with Sainte-Mère-Église being about 30 minutes away by car for the Airborne Museum. Bayeux is also 30 minutes away by car, for those who want to see the cathedral and tapestry.
Not really a fault of the hotel but I would strongly recommend to anyone wanting to have dinner in the area to reserve beforehand because the restaurants in Grandcamp-Maisy generally were completely full.

Seb Magnifique
