Grand Site Occitanie - Sète
As if resting on the water between the Thau lagoon and the Mediterranean, separated from the sea by a thin strip of sand, Sète owes its nickname of Île Singulière to this original topography.
Rising from the ground by the will of Louis XVI to give an outlet to the Canal du Midi, today the 1st Mediterranean fishing port in France, it remains above all a maritime city with its commercial, fishing and pleasure ports, its traditions – including the famous nautical jousts – and its gastronomy which gives pride of place to seafood.
And …. action !
Its picturesque architecture is regularly used as the setting for films and television series, and in the summer it becomes the scene of numerous festivals.
What to see, what to do in Sète?
Live in the intensity of Sète
Sète has a large community of artists and its cultural offer is very rich. As for museums, visit the Paul Valéry fine arts museum, the MIAM created by the painter Hervé Di Rosa, the CRAC dedicated to contemporary art, the Georges Brassens space. Not forgetting the MaCO, an open-air museum dedicated to street art and summer festivals!
Images Singulières, K Live, Voix Vives de Méditerranée, Jazz à Sète, Fiest’à Sète, …: photography, electronic, current music, jazz, world music, poetry … there is something for everyone!
Treat yourself to fisherman's cuisine
Stuffed mussels and squid, macaronade, cuttlefish in rouille, etc: the specialties of Sète were born from a tasty port mixing between Sète, Catalan, Italian and Spanish fishermen.
In Les Halles, the stalls are overflowing with fish from the nearby auction: an invitation to enjoy a tielle (small pie garnished with spicy octopus) on the go while tasting the unique atmosphere of the market. On the Quai de la Marine, choose one of the many restaurants specializing in seafood and discover the excellent shellfish from the Etang de Thau.
