Grand Site Occitanie - Gorges de l'Hérault
Descending from the Cévennes, in the Séranne massif, near the Pic Saint-Loup, the Hérault river has carved wild, verdant and mineral gorges.
This great site has two UNESCO heritage sites

At the heart of the Grand Site, the medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert has been home to Gellone Abbey since the 9th century, which shone over a myriad of medieval towns, churches, chapels and bridges.
The territory of the Gorges de l'Hérault is labeled Grand Site de France, in particular for its approach to sustainable tourism and for the enhancement of its heritage.
Today, the Devil's Bridge and the Abbey of Gellone are listed as World Heritage by Unesco as part of the Ways of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle in France. Haven of spirituality and favorite place for nature lovers, the Hérault gorges have inspired men for millennia, who perpetuate traditions and know-how here: potters, glassmakers, winegrowers, olive growers, farmers...
What to see, what to do in the Gorges de l’Hérault?

Go to the Devil's Bridge
Descending from the Cévennes, in the Séranne massif, the Hérault river has carved wild gorges, truly spectacular at the level of the Devil's bridge. It is the oldest Romanesque bridge in France, with a firmly anchored legend. After crossing it on foot, take the new footbridge of the Angels designed by the architect Rudy Ricciotti, for a breathtaking view.
On the interpretation trail as in the Maison du Grand Site, you will learn more about this preserved environment and its inhabitants, from otters to Salzmann pines.
Discover the ancestral know-how of potters
In the heart of the Hérault Valley, Saint-Jean-de-Fos perpetuates a 600-year-old ceramic tradition. Stroll through this pretty medieval village whose houses are decorated with glazed pottery. Stop by its workshops and don't miss its large potters' market in August.
You can also model your own masterpiece at Argileum: this interactive museum retraces the saga of the Jeannifossian potters in an authentic 19th century workshop.
