The region also captivates visitors with its exceptional heritage. Set out to explore the famous fortified churches of Thiérache, unique testaments to the region’s history; visit the charming villages; and marvel at the traditional red-brick architecture.

For culture lovers, you can explore the Familistère de Guise, which takes you on a journey through 19th-century social and industrial history, and the Matisse Museum in Le Cateau-Cambrésis.

For family fun, plenty of activities await: Base de loisirs, Fishing, horseback riding, tree-top adventure courses, farmers’ markets, local farms, and tastings of Thiérache specialties—including the famous Maroilles cheese and other local products.

Here are the five cities closest to Effry:

Hirson. This city is located about 10 kilometers northwest of Effry. It is known for its cultural heritage, notably the Fort de la Salmagne and the Sainte-Thérèse Church. Hirson has a Railway station that connects it to other major cities in the region.

Vervins. Located about 17 kilometers southwest of Effry, Vervins is the administrative center for northeastern Aisne. It is popular for its weekly market and its historical heritage, including City Hall and the Saint-Médard Church.

Guise. Located about 25 kilometers west of Effry, Guise is famous for its fortified castle, which was once the residence of the Dukes of Guise. The city is also known for the Familistère de Guise, a social housing complex built by Jean-Baptiste André Godin in the 19th century.

La Capelle. Located about 15 kilometers north of Effry, the city is known for its international racetrack and its livestock market, one of the largest in the region. The city is also a stopover for those traveling to Belgium, thanks to its proximity to the border.

Le Nouvion-en-Thiérache. This small city, located about 20 kilometers northwest of Effry, is renowned for its Saint-Martin Church and its lush, green surroundings, typical of the Thiérache bocage.
