Obersteigen is a hamlet in the commune of Wangenbourg-Engenthal, Bas-Rhin. On the regional border with Lorraine, marked by the Valsberg pass, the hamlet lies at the crossroads of the road linking the Bruche valley to Saverne (RD 218) and the road leading from Wasselonne to Dabo and Sarrebourg (RD 224 then RD 45). Highly appreciated for its climate, it offers a mountain micro-climate: protected from westerly winds, many people come here to get some fresh air and admire the marvellous scenery. The setting is also ideal for nature activities (hiking, mountain biking, etc.). At the same time, it's an ideal base for discovering Alsace's tourist attractions: from the great classics (Saverne, Marmoutier, the Wine Route, Obernai, Mont Ste-Odile, ....) to the more secret corners of the region. It also takes in the highlights of nearby Lorraine (Dabo, Phalsbourg, Parc animalier de Sainte-Croix). You can also discover the Sainte-Marie-de-l'Assomption chapel, listed as a Monument Historique in 1862. This sandstone building dates back to the 13th century and was part of the Obersteigen monastery, where you can still see the refectory, a watchtower and the former prior's house. In addition, a Vosges sandstone water pipe is still in place in the nearby forest.
