Rocher de Roquebrune

The Rocher de Roquebrune straddles the communes of Muy and Fréjus and is one of the most precious natural attractions of the Massif des Maures. Known for a long time as the « Rocher des Trois Croix (Rock of 3 Crosses) », the Rocher de Roquebrune has a fascinating history as well as being a beautiful place. This will become very apparent as you walk along the banks of the River Argens or climb to the top of the 372m summit to admire the valley below. The red earth of the Rock harbours many remains dating from the Iron Age and Middle Ages, but it is probably the 3 crosses at its summit which are the most emblematic. The work of sculptor Bernar Venet, they represent the three major artists who painted the Crucifixion, Giotto, Grunewald and El Greco. The crosses are also part of the religious heritage of the site where legend has it that the rifts in the rock appeared after the death of Christ. These rifts, known as the ""Saint-Trou"" can be explored with friends or a partner. The Rocher is certainly a destination full of surprises !

Climb to the top of Roquebrune – a family outing !

An adventure playground for outdoor sports fans, the Rocher de Roquebrune is the starting point for numerous walks through the ‘garrigue’ along well-maintained, sign-posted trails surrounded by chestnut and oak trees. You may be lucky enough to see falcons circling overhead as you climb the slopes of the rock. The GR51 hiking path, known as the Sentier des Trois-Croix or ""Draille du Facteur"" leads to enchanting natural attractions like the dense cork tree forest and the hermit’s house, where a surprise awaits you…  The rock can be explored on foot or by mountain bike if you prefer. To enjoy contemplating the Rock from a distance in the neighbouring wooded hills, follow the ‘Draille du Facteur’ path beside the calm waters of the River Argens.  You can also hire a canoe, kayak or paddle board to discover the tranquil, unspoilt banks of the river surrounded by amazingly rich countryside.
