Sisteron - a passage between the Alps and the Mediterranean

The Musée du Vieux Sisteron is devoted to the history of the town which is situated on a sill in the Durance Valley, a   passage between the Alps and the Mediterranean. The Ecomusée de la Ruralité has hundreds of objects from the everyday life and traditional crafts of country folk to ensure that the local rural heritage is not forgotten. Other heritage attractions include the Défilé de la Pierre Ecrite where Dardanus built a settlement named Theopolis in around 420 on the Route du Col de Fontbelle, a well-known feature of the Monte-Carlo Rally, the Crypte de Dromon at Saint-Geniez, the Pont de la Reine Jeanne (bridge) and the Crypte de Vilhosc. The town is also famous for its excellent Sisteron lamb (which has PGI status), its abattoir which is the leading municipal sheep abattoir in France, and its pieds-et-paquets, a culinary speciality of Provence consisting of sheep’s feet and stuffed tripe stewed together. At the foot of the town the Plan d’Eau des Marres (Lake) has a swimming area with lifeguard presence in July and August, a picnic area and play park.

Sporting activities are not forgotten with equipped rock-climbing routes in the town itself, and paths leading to the ascent of the Rocher de la Baume which forms the sill of the Clue de la Durance, opposite the Citadel. Pilots from around the world flock to the nearby soaring spot at Vaumeilh, one of the best-known in France which benefits from a climate highly suitable for the activity.  The Via Ferrata du Caire is a sporting and aerial adventure trail on a 250m limestone rockface with 3 zip wires, a 60-metre walkway and a Nepalese bridge.

"" For me, Sisteron is the enchanting Festival des Nuits de la Citadelle, which presents superb music and drama from mid-July to mid-August"".
