Lac du Salagou
Lac du Salagou finished filling up at the end of the 1970s when parts of the villages of Celles, Octon and Clermont-l’Hérault disappeared under the waters.
Lac du Sagalou – a lake in a class of its own !
In many ways, this reservoir between Millau and Montpellier is a unique place in the Occitanie region. Historically and culturally speaking – and you are sure to realise this when you visit the site – the abandoned remains of the old village of Celles can be seen beside the lake. Time seems to have stood still here… As far as nature is concerned, the lake is an extraordinary place with beaches made of ‘ruffe’ local red stone which are in total harmony with the blue of the Hérault sky and the green of the wild countryside around the site.
Lac du Salagou is the ultimate family destination with activities to suit everyone on and around the lake. Here at the heart of the Occitan wine-producing region, wine lovers can enjoy wine-tasting in and around Saint-Chinian, near Causses-et-Veyran.
Lac du Salagou – a challenging adventure playground !
There’s no better way to start the day with a clear head than a swim in the cool, tranquil waters of Lac du Salagou ! Another essential is to climb to the top of Mont Liausson hill (535m) to enjoy views across all the countryside of Haut-Languedoc. If you feel in need of a walk, the Cirque de Mourèze and its rocks, sculpted by time and the elements, is not very far away. Another equally amazing place is the ‘Sources de Lagarel’, a more challenging walk with steep hills.
Returning to the lake itself, head for the outdoor activity centre which has a host of water and land-based activities for all the family. Younger family members can enjoy an introduction to archery, followed by a family trip in a pedalo and finally have fun exploring the different lakeside beaches.
There’s plenty to do at Lac du Salagou !
There is more to Salagou than the lake and waterside fun ! The surrounding area has a rich historic heritage, like the textile village of Clermont-l’Hérault with its 13th century Gothic church of Saint-Paul and Paulhan, a small perfectly-shaped circular village - a great opportunity to make children aware of history and heritage.
If you’re feeling a little peckish after all this activity, there are plenty of local goodies to try while sitting on your beach towel beside the lake. ‘Oreillettes du Languedoc’ and ‘Zézettes de Sète’ are delicious biscuits, perfect for a snack. One of the great specialities, a drink this time, and one for adults only as it contains Muscat eau-de-vie, is Biterrois which comes from the Béziers area of Hérault.
