Les Pierres Jaumâtres, natural menhirs
At the summit of Mont Barlot, 600 metres above sea level, discover the Pierres Jaumâtres. These natural menhirs, carved by the weather, have given rise to many legends. The mountain is said to have been inhabited by a tribe of giants...
[Les Pierres Jaumâtres a granite chaos steeped in legend
Be amazed by the Pierres Jaumâtres site, a granite chaos located in the Creuse département, in the commune of Toulx-Sainte-Croix. To get there, head up the Petite Creuse valley and climb Mont Barlot along an undergrowth path. Don't panic, this short climb is suitable for the whole family: young and old alike will be rewarded at the finish! And what a reward!
At Les Pierres Jaumâtres, you'll be amazed. The most striking thing is the pile of stones, these improbable heaps of granite: cores of very hard rock that have withstood the erosion of rain and wind for hundreds of thousands of years. One wonders how some of them even stay in place! Truly astonishing... The Pierres Jaumâtres site rises to an altitude of around 600 metres, and at some points you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views over the Creuse!
The Pierres Ja umâtres phenomenon is explained by geology, but it has also fed the imagination, and there are many legends about this remarkable site. The daughter of the fairy Viviane and King Arthur is said to have been imprisoned here, the golden calf is said to have been hidden here, and the evil fairies have not yet completely deserted the site. It has to be said that the atmosphere here is mysterious..
In fact, George Sand and Frédéric Chopin loved to stroll here and let their imaginations run wild.
[How to visit Les Pierres Jaumâtres
