Châteaux de la Loire : Chambord

A few minutes from Blois, stands the Château de Chambord, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chambord is the most visited château in Loir-et-Cher. Built at the request of François 1er, it is renowned for its open double-spiral staircase. The ‘à la Française’ gardens, whose restoration was completed in 2017, are absolutely magnificent.

A cycle ride, a trip in a rowing boat and listening to the roar of stags in autumn can round off the visit to this gigantic edifice with 282 fireplaces. The Domaine National de Chambord (estate) covers more than 5,000 hectares and is the largest enclosed wooded estate in Europe. It is home to some wonderful wildlife.

Châteaux de la Loire : Cheverny

Further to the south is the Château de Cheverny, a seigneurial estate which has been in the same family for over 600 years. A symbol of the aristocracy and its traditions, the estate still hunts to hounds. But Cheverny is also linked to the world of Tintin. The château was the inspiration for Captain Haddock’s home and now houses a permanent exhibition devoted to the famous reporter, « the Secrets of Marlinspike Hall ».

Châteaux de la Loire : Chaumont sur Loire

The unmissable Château de Chaumont sur Loire overlooks the river between Amboise and Blois. It is very well-known for its annual International Garden Festival which takes place from the end of April to mid-October with a different theme reflected in thirty gardens created by landscape designers from around the world. The Château de Chaumont, which belonged to Catherine de Médicis then Diane de Poitiers, is famous for its stables which in the 19th century were considered to be the most modern in Europe.
