Holidays in the Alps
Forming a natural boundary between eight countries, the Alps is the largest mountainous region in France in terms of area and the number and height of its summits, crowned by Mont Blanc at 4,810m.
Exceptionally beautiful !
So it is not at all surprising that the region is known around the world for its mountain activities both in summer and winter. A premium destination for winter sports, the Alps has more than 60 ski resorts in the Savoie region alone, including the internationally renowned Menuires, Courchevel and Méribel in the Domaine des Trois Vallées, and La Plagne and Les Arcs in the Domaine Paradiski.
In summer it is a gigantic adventure space with thousands of kilometres of signposted footpaths, cycle trails within several natural parks : the Parc Naturel Régional de Chartreuse in the Savoie and Isère regions, the Parc National des Ecrins in Hautes-Alpes and the Parc Naturel Régional du Vercors. These parks enable the extraordinary biodiversity to be protected, making it possible to catch sight of majestic golden eagles, elusive stoats and agile chamois.
The region is home to many remarkable conifers like the silver fir, but the real Holy Grail for nature lovers is the edelweiss which is found deep in the mountains. And if you feel a little peckish during your stay, you can count on Alpine gourmet food including Savoyarde cheese fondue and other specialities, cheeses such raclette, tomme de Savoie and reblochon, one of the ingredients of tartiflette served at Le Chabichou restaurant. To relax after skiing or walking why not enjoy a health and fitness break at one of the region’s spa resorts like Aix-les-Bains.
The French Alps is a region rich in customs and traditions, offering outdoor holidays in exceptionally beautiful surroundings while enjoying the attractions of a culture dating back hundreds of years.
