Fabulous self catering for a large family
We visited Le Manoir 2 successive years and thoroughly enjoyed it. There aren’t many places suitable for a family of 10, and it’s only two fifths of the main Manoir that is rented out - the owners live in the larger part.
Excellent heated indoor swimming pool is available for large amounts of time as part of the price.
The historic atmosphere of the place is amazing – it feels like staying in a baronial hall - the high ceilings and beams are fantastic, but the stairs are a bit dot-go-one. The downside is that the thick walls make WiFi a bit challenging but it’s fine if you position yourself in the right place. Electric sockets are also rather few and far between.
The 2 toilets are shoehorned into rather small corners with no room for washhand basins which is a bit weird to English or American visitors but a small sacrifice for staying here. The upstairs rooms (sleeps 6) all have good showers in the rooms. The downstairs rooms (a further 4 beds) didn’t - access was to a separate bathroom; they were frankly a bit musty, but ok. A bit of a balance between history and mod cons.
The kitchen was well equipped although I recommend you take your own knives... We found the hob and oven a challenge but they are good modern ones and it probably says more about our Aga-brains than any detriment in the equipment. Dishwasher and washing machine both good, but we ended up buying an additional drying rack.
In summer you obviously won’t want to light it but there’s a superb open fire in the main room - wood is supplied. Just remember to open the chimney flu before lighting your fire . One of our visits was in a cool early April and the extra cost of electricity for the heating was quite steep (I strongly recommend you work out how to turn off individual heaters - we mistakenly thought they must work on a thermostat and switch off when not needed, but that was not the case), but the previous year it was warmer and we didn’t pay anything.
