Wendel Mine Museum
Wendel Minel
Situated on the site of an old coal mine, Parc Explor Wendel symbolises and provides first-hand accounts of the history of coal mining in Lorraine which began at Petite-Rosselle in 1856 and ended in 2004 at Creutzwald. The 100 hectares of countryside are now devoted to walking, cycling and discovering the everyday life and working life of miners.
Take a trip down into the heart of the galleries, over 1,200 metres below ground. After experiencing the sensations of a real-time descent, various sites are presented in conditions similar to those of the final years when the mine was operational. Two preparatory work sites on the rock face and tracing with a single-armed Pantofore and AM100 machines show how the galleries were dug. These are followed by extraction from the coal face, some seams are horizontal, others sloping or vertical, each requiring specific human and technical skills, as well as specially adapted machines (Electra 2000, ANF, etc.). Accompanied by a guide, this trip deep into the bowels of the earth will certainly give you food for thought.
