The Old Town of Belfort
An ideal destination for a stay in the town to enjoy its rich heritage, yet stay close to nature. Stroll around the streets of Belfort with a partner, family or friends to discover the charm of the town steeped in history and soak up the atmosphere of its heritage buildings and friendly inhabitants. Explore the old walled town between the Citadel and the River Savoureuse ! Enter the historic centre through the Porte de Brisach, a royal gate dating from 1687 and the only entry point to the Vauban Pentagon which remains visible today !
Behind the thick pink sandstone walls, lie the treasures of Belfort and its gentle way of life. It is impossible to talk about Belfort and the Vauban era without mentioning the famous bastion towers. Today Tower n° 27 houses an escape game, Tower n° 41 has the Musée des Beaux Arts (fine arts museum), while Tower n°46 is a venue for temporary exhibitions. Marvel at the Cathedral of Saint-Christophe, built in the first half of the 18th century with its monumental, listed organ, one of the jewels of Belfort !

The partly-pedestrianized Place d’Armes is a popular meeting place for locals in the evening. It is a great place to stroll around and enjoy a drink at a pavement café or in a wine bar. In summer music is played at the bandstand. It is definitely THE place to be to enjoy different events and activities in the old town ! The Place de la Grande Fontaine and the Place de la Petite Fontaine are delightful squares containing listed monuments which were among the only sources of water in Belfort many years ago.
Shopaholics and foodies will find everything they need in the timeless streets of the town. For antique and junk shop fans, the largest flea market in Eastern France can be found in the narrow streets of the old town on the first Sunday of every month from March to November. It is THE meeting place for second-hand fans, antique dealers and anyone who loves history. Wander around, hunt for a bargain, chat to sellers and buy something to add to your collection !
The centre of Belfort is a colourful place with a bright, Italian air ! Grey, white and beige buildings are banned, making way for gorgeous blue, pink, green, ochre and yellow painted facades !
