Lac des Settons
At the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan, in the region of the Grands Lacs (Great Lakes), Lac des Settons is an ideal destination for a family day out, especially as it has Blue Flag status for the excellent quality of its water. Surrounded by forests, rivers and typical villages, Lac des Settons is perfect for a relaxing family holiday !
Lac des Settons water sports centre
During the summer, there is a beach with lifeguards just next to the outdoor leisure activity centre which offers a wide range of water sports like dinghy sailing, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, canoeing, rowing, paddle-boarding and water skiing. You can also hire a motor boat and moor up at one of the islands for a swim. There is even a miniature harbour with model electric boats for children ! On the lake shore pine and larch woods offer shady areas for picnics or just resting. There are lots of footpaths to explore on walks around the lake and numerous quiet fishing spots which can be reached on foot or by boat to catch zander, carp, perch, pike, trout and other fish. A night-time carp fishing area along the length of the tourist route is open in April, May, June, September and October.
Walking and mountain biking around Lac des Settons
There are many different marked trails for walking, mountain biking and horse riding and the GR13 hiking path runs through the neighbouring countryside, along with the horse-riding trail around Morvan. At Gouloux, the Saut de Gouloux (Gouloux Falls) is an important tourist site. Here a stream tumbles into an old rift which has created an overhang and becomes a 10-metre-high fall. These falls, in the depths of the forest, cannot be seen from the road. They are reached along a path edged with ancient, moss-covered low walls, broad-leaved trees and conifers which gives the place a wild, natural character. A sound hut has been built by the river to amplify the noise of the ‘gurgling white water’. The granite walls next to the falls are the ruins of two old mills—one of them was used to produce flour and the other oil, and the site of a former timber-floating port. Information boards explain the history of the site. Discover the other lakes with major fishing spots near Lac des Settons, go Canadian canoeing on Lac de Chaumeçon and Lac de Pannecière). In addition the River Cure and the River Chalaux are perfect for white water sports including rafting, hot-dog tubing, riverboarding and air boat.
« White-water rafting down the Cure with friends followed by an evening swim at Lac des Settons then watching the sun set over the lake, definitely wonderful moments to share ! », says Aude from Gites de France.
