What to see and do near Lac de Saint-Pardoux

The nearby ancient fortified village of Châteauponsac overlooks the Rivers Semme and Gartempe from its rocky perch. The rural holiday resort has magnificent panoramic views, one of which was chosen for the opening credits of the TV series « Un Village Français » !
Known as the ‘Perle de la Gartempe’, the village has many fine examples from its long historic past and also a fascinating museum, the Musée Ethnographique René Baubérot, which presents life in the Limousin through the ages. The Gartempe is a popular fishing river, category 2 downstream from the Pont des Bonhommes bridge and category 1 upstream. It rises near Peyrabout in La Creuse and after a 200km journey, sometimes calm, sometimes turbulent, it flows into the Creuse at La Roche Pozay. The Vallée de la Gartempe has remarkable flora and fauna which have led to its classification as an important ecological site. From its rocky promontory, the church of Saint Thyrse looks down over the river as it meanders along at the foot of Châteauponsac. The river pauses at the Barrage d'Etrangleloup dam, a well-known salmon leap where a scanner enables the fish to be seen and counted during their migration upriver. Several streams, the Ardent, Cluzeau, Dent, Lascoux, Ballacou and Puymailhac flow into the Gartempe which has freshwater crayfish, brown trout, barb, carp, ablet, pike, zander, bait fish and gudgeon.
