Overlooking Martinique at 1,397 metres altitude, this volcano presents walkers with a real challenge. It is relatively hard to climb as it is steep with an often rocky terrain. There are several refuge huts on the way up mountain, surrounded by splendid scenery. The views from the mountainside give a superb overview of the island, from the Caribbean Sea to forests and from banana plantations to little valleys.
From the 2nd refuge hut, the most intrepid adventurers can follow a path which leads directly down into the crater known as La Caldeira. The ascent ends at the « Chinois », the summit of the mountain, which is the most difficult part to climb because there are lots of cavities and rocky debris.
From the top in clear weather, there is a magnificent view of Martinique as well as the islands of Saint Vincent and Saint Lucia. A well-deserved reward as the ‘old lady’ is not easy to climb ! Once back at the bottom of the volcano, stop for a refreshing swim in the waters of the Rade de Saint-Pierre, or carry on to the neighbouring commune of Le Prêcheur and it wild beaches of black sand.
