Throughout its history, Rouen has always attracted the greatest French artists and writers, such as Monet, Stendhal, Victor-Hugo and Dufy; indeed, it gave rise to the renowned Rouen School. This is one of Normandy's most atypical towns, with half-timbered houses, sumptuous Gothic cathedrals... This town steeped in history, which is forever linked to Joan of Arc, is absolutely charming.
Rouen – city of Art and History
The city of a hundred steeples, dear to Victor Hugo, has an exceptional heritage which can be enjoyed on a walk through the historic centre and along the quays beside the Seine, now converted into a riverside walk. Rouen is a great place for a discovery, cultural or gastronomic break at any time of year. Stroll through the cobbled streets of the city centre which are lined with half-timbered houses. Discover historic buildings and architectural treasures including the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Gros Horloge (clock), Palais de Justice, Aître Saint-Maclou and the church of Jeanne d'Arc...
Gourmet restaurants and unusual shops in the antique dealer district liven up your walk.
Rouen is well-known for its fine restaurants, so enjoy the wide variety of regional dishes made from cheese, apples and cider as well as local specialities like « canard à la rouennaise (Duck Rouen-style) » and Douillon d’Elbeuf, a type of apple puff.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen houses a rich collection of works and Impressionist paintings including one of the famous « Cathédrale de Rouen » series painted by Claude Monet. Inspired by the ever-changing daylight, just like many other Impressionist painters, he painted around 30 pictures of the cathedral during his time in Rouen.
Joan of Arc is an iconic figure who marked the city’s history. The Historial Jeanne d’Arc recreates the heroine’s life story using projections, reconstitutions and audio-visual effects – an amazing feat of technology and innovation. A unique immersive experience at the heart of the 15th century !
The Panorama XXL – a unique cultural centre in France
It is difficult to miss this gigantic circular building on the banks of the Seine. Yet the Panorama XXL by the artist Yadegar Asisi is not out of place in the landscape of modern-day Rouen. On the contrary, this avant-garde 30m high symbol is an invitation to view one of the largest 360° frescoes in the world which is strikingly realistic.
